SONAR HIT

During the 2000 expedition, the craft's equipment, using PC/View Forward Scanning Sonar with a transmit frequency of 200 kHz, detected a very large object just below the surface with the following readings:

  • Wednesday August 30,2000 11:47am
  • Heading 225 SW
  • 49° 49.26N,119°31.11W
  • Range to target 48 meters
  • Target Depth 7.5 meters
  • Water Depth 65 meters
  • Sweep Time 35 seconds
  • Approximate Size of Target 15 m length

When the crew monitoring the sonar noticed the large object they immediately hit the "capture" key on their computer and were able to capture the object's position on their next sweep. The object was no longer on the screen at the next sonar sweep, leading the crew to believe that it dove to a depth beyond the sonar beam.

The object in question was monitored by all the crew present in the cabin as it moved from port to starboard 10° and was measured on the sonar screen to be approximately 15 meters in length.
